How to Measure Yourself for a Suit at Home

A great suit starts with accurate measurements. Whether you're ordering a wedding suit, a formal two-piece, or a three-piece for a special occasion, getting your measurements right before you buy saves time, money, and the frustration of a poor fit. Here's exactly how to do it at home — no tailor required.

What You'll Need

• A soft measuring tape (not a rigid ruler)
• A friend to help (measurements are more accurate when someone else takes them)
• A well-fitted shirt and trousers to wear while measuring

The 5 Key Measurements

1. Chest

Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest, just under your armpits and across your shoulder blades. Keep the tape level and snug but not tight. This is your chest measurement.

2. Waist

Measure around your natural waist — the narrowest part of your torso, usually about an inch above your belly button. Don't suck in; breathe normally and keep the tape comfortably snug.

3. Hips / Seat

Stand with your feet together and measure around the fullest part of your hips and seat, usually about 8 inches below your natural waist. This measurement determines trouser fit.

4. Inseam

Measure from your crotch to the bottom of your ankle along the inside of your leg. It helps to wear a pair of well-fitting trousers and measure along the inner seam. This determines trouser length.

5. Jacket Length

Measure from the top of your shoulder (at the base of your neck) down to where you'd like the jacket to end — typically just below the seat. A well-fitted jacket should cover the seat of your trousers.

Tips for Accurate Measurements

• Always measure over the clothes you'd typically wear under a suit (a dress shirt, not a thick jumper)
• Keep the tape parallel to the floor for chest, waist, and hip measurements
• Take each measurement twice to confirm accuracy
• When in doubt, size up — it's easier to take a suit in than to let it out
